Brief History of the Embassy

1983 - Brunei was host to more than 6,000 Filipino professionals and workers engaged in the construction of Istana Nurul Iman and other government projects.

10 August 1983 - The Philippine Consulate-General was set up in Bandar Seri Begawan to render assistance to the Filipino workers. The late Consul-General Tristan V. Enverga headed the Consulate-General.

1 November 1983-1984 - Brunei set up an office in Makati City.

When Brunei Darussalam declared its independence on 1 January 1984, the Philippines established full diplomatic ties with Brunei. The Philippine Consulate-General was elevated to an Embassy in Bandar Seri Begawan. The Embassy of Brunei Darussalam was subsequently opened in Makati City.

H.E. Ambassador Benjamin B. Domingo was the first Philippine Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam.

14 March 1984 - H.E. Ambassador Eusebio A. Abaquin presented his credentials to His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-pertuan as the next Philippine Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam. He completed his tour of duty on 30 June 1992.

16 December 1986 - H.E. Ambassador Juan V. Saez was accredited as the new Philippine Ambassador to Brunei. He passed away in Houston, Texas on 25 September 1994.

Consul-General Virginia H. Benavidez took charge of the Philippine Embassy as Charge d' Affaires, a.i.

29 November 1993 - H.E. Ambassador Ramon A. Tirol arrived in Brunei and presented his credentials to His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-pertuan on 5 April 1995. He returned to Manila on 30 June 1998 upon completion of his tour of duty in Brunei Darussalam.

9 Dec. 1993-4 April 1995 - Consul General Benavidez was Charge d' Affaires, a.i.

9 March 1995 - H.E. Ambassador Enrique A. Zaldivar arrived to take up his post as Philippine Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam. He ended his tour of duty in Brunei on 31 March 2002.

H.E. Ambassador Virginia H. Benavidez arrived in Brunei Darussalam. She presented her credentials to His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan on 29 May 2002 and is the current Philippine Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam.

1 July 1998-17 March 1999 - This will mark the 20th anniversary of Philippine-Brunei diplomatic relations.
